Hans Memling exhibition in Rome
Hans Memling exhibition in Rome – The grandiose figure of St. Michael, the cohorts of the virtuous, greeted by St. Peter as they prepare to cross the threshold of Paradise. The sinners tumble into the fires of Hell. That is what we see in Flemish painter Hans Memling’s monumental triptych of the Last Judgement, now in the National Museum of Gdansk but which he painted for the chapel dedicated to St. Michael in the Badia Fiesolana outside Florence, although in the event it never made it to Italy. Commissioned by Florentine banker Angelo Tani and his wife Caterina di Francesco Tanagli. It was shipped on a galley that was attacked by pirates, who took the painting to Gdansk, or Danzig as it was known then. Some 600 years later, the most famous work of Hans Memling will be touching Italian soil for the first time for an exhibition due to open at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome on 10 October.
The first ever monographic event devoted to Memling in Italy explores every aspect of his career and work from altarpieces to portable triptychs and devotional works, in addition to his famous portraits. Masterpieces of religious art from some of the most important museums in the world: Pagagnotti Triptych (currently divided between the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence and the National Gallery in London), Moreel Triptych (from the Groeningemuseum in Bruges) , and a magnificent series of portraits including the Portrait of a Young Man from the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, the Portrait of a Man from the Royal Collection in London (an exceptional loan, courtesy of H, M. Queen Elizabeth II), a Portrait of a Woman from a private collection in the United States, the Portrait of a Man from the Frick Collection in New York, and the magnificent Portrait of a Man with a Roman Coin from the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp.
