We have to go back more than seven centuries, when Pope Celestine V decided to leave the papacy. Comes today the decision unexpected of Benedict XVI, who announced his resignation during the consistory.

When will election of the new Pope? From 1 March, after the resignation scheduled for February 28, will begin the election. So it is very likely that within a few weeks, before Easter, the Church will have its new Pontiff, and Rome awaits the faithful from all over the world.

Benedict XVI does not participate in the conclave and will have no role either in the management of Church. The Pope will first at Castel Gandolfo and then at the Headquarters of the monastery of cloistered nuns on the Vatican hill.
